Minimum Wage Guarantee
Full Form of MWG
What is MWG?
Minimum Wage Guarantee (MWG) refers to a policy framework or scheme by which the government ensures that every worker receives at least a statutorily fixed minimum wage for their labour. In India, the concept is primarily embodied in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which guarantees 100 days of wage employment per year to rural households, with wages paid at the state-level minimum wage rate. The MWG aims to protect vulnerable workers from exploitation, reduce poverty, and promote decent work. It is implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development and state labour departments across all rural areas of India. The MWG is particularly relevant in the informal sector, where wage underpayment is common. For competitive exams like UPSC, State PSCs, and UGC NET, MWG is discussed under labour economics, social justice, and government schemes. Understanding the MWG mechanism helps students analyze income security policies and their impact on poverty alleviation. The guarantee also ties into broader debates on universal basic income and labour rights.
