National Rural Employment Guarantee Act
Full Form of NREGA
What is NREGA?
The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) is a landmark Indian labour law and social security measure that guarantees the right to work. Enacted in 2005, it was later renamed the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in 2009. The primary objective is to provide at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment per financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. Implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development, it aims to enhance livelihood security, create durable assets, and reduce rural-urban migration. NREGA is applied across all rural districts in India, with Gram Panchayats as the key implementing bodies. It is widely used by rural poor and marginalized communities. The scheme also promotes women's participation and provides a legal guarantee of employment, unlike earlier wage programs. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state civil services, NREGA is a critical topic under social welfare and rural development policies. It is often asked about in terms of its features, impact, and challenges. The act has significantly influenced poverty reduction and rural infrastructure development in India.
