What is IAY?
Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY) is a flagship housing scheme launched by the Government of India in 1985, aimed at providing financial assistance to Below Poverty Line (BPL) households in rural areas for constructing and upgrading their houses. Administered under the Ministry of Rural Development, IAY was originally a component of the broader Jawahar Rozgar Yojana and later became a standalone program. It targeted Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and free bonded labourers, with a focus on women empowerment by insisting that houses be registered in the name of a female member.
