Medical Termination of Pregnancy
Full Form of MTP
What is MTP?
Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) refers to the intentional ending of a pregnancy through medical or surgical procedures, governed in India by the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 (amended in 2021). The Act allows women to terminate pregnancies up to 20 weeks with the opinion of one doctor, 20-24 weeks with two doctors, and beyond 24 weeks only in cases of substantial fetal abnormalities (with approval from a medical board). MTP is a critical public health service in India, addressing unsafe abortions—a leading cause of maternal mortality. It is used in hospitals, clinics, and accredited health centers, with strict compliance to legal and ethical guidelines. The procedure is accessible to all women, including minors, rape survivors, and those with contraceptive failures. In Indian educational contexts, MTP is a key topic in MBBS, nursing, and public health exams, focusing on legal provisions, indications, contraindications, and complications. The recent 2021 amendment expanded access, reflecting India's commitment to reproductive autonomy. Understanding MTP is essential for healthcare providers, women, and policymakers to ensure safe and legal pregnancy terminations while preventing misuse. The Act also mandates confidentiality and restricts advertisement of sex selection, aligning with the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.
