Most Backward Classes
Full Form of MBC
What is MBC?
MBC stands for Most Backward Classes, a social category used in India, particularly in the state of Tamil Nadu. It refers to a subgroup within the Other Backward Classes (OBC) that is considered more disadvantaged in terms of social and economic indicators. The classification was introduced by the Tamil Nadu government to provide targeted affirmative action for castes that, while not falling under Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes, are among the most backward within the OBC umbrella. The MBC category includes communities such as Vanniyars, Gounders, and others, and it entitles them to a separate reservation quota in education and public employment. In Tamil Nadu, the reservation policy allocates 10.5% for MBCs, in addition to the 30% for BCs, 18% for SCs, and 1% for STs. This system is used in government job recruitment, college admissions, and state-run schemes. The concept of MBC is relevant for competitive examinations like the UPSC civil services, state PSC exams, and other government tests where knowledge of reservation policies is required. Understanding MBC is crucial for aspirants studying Indian social policies and Tamil Nadu's affirmative action framework.
