Micro Air Vehicle
Full Form of MAV
What is MAV?
A Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) is a small, unmanned aerial vehicle typically ranging from a few centimeters to one meter in size, designed for surveillance, reconnaissance, and data collection in confined or urban environments. In the Indian context, MAVs are increasingly utilized by defence agencies such as the Indian Army, Air Force, and paramilitary forces for border monitoring, counter-insurgency operations, and disaster management. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and several Indian startups are actively developing indigenous MAV platforms to reduce dependence on foreign imports. These vehicles are often equipped with cameras, sensors, and occasionally lightweight payloads, and can operate autonomously via GPS or through remote control. MAVs are also used in agriculture for crop monitoring, in infrastructure inspection, and in academic research for aerodynamics and robotics. For competitive exams like UPSC, NDA, and CDS, awareness of MAVs and related drone technologies may be tested under defence technology and current affairs sections, especially in questions about Indian military modernisation and anti-drone systems.
