Mutual Assured Destruction
Full Form of MAD
What is MAD?
Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) is a doctrine of military strategy and national security policy in which a full-scale use of nuclear weapons by two or more opposing sides would cause the complete annihilation of both the attacker and the defender. It is based on the theory of deterrence, where the threat of using strong weapons against the enemy prevents the enemy's use of those same weapons. The term was popularized during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. In the Indian context, MAD has influenced discussions on nuclear posture, although India follows a policy of credible minimum deterrence and no-first-use, which is distinct from the classic MAD stance. The doctrine is studied in Indian defence academies and appears in UPSC exams under international relations and security topics. MAD remains a key concept in strategic studies, especially when analyzing nuclear dynamics among nations like India, Pakistan, and China.
