What is ABM?
An Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) is a missile system designed to intercept and destroy incoming ballistic missiles during flight, thereby providing a defensive shield against nuclear or conventional missile attacks. In India, the ABM concept is central to the country's Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) programme, which has been under development since the early 2000s under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). India's two-tier ABM system consists of the Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) for exo-atmospheric interception (above 50 km altitude) and the Advanced Air Defence (AAD) for endo-atmospheric interception (below 30 km). These systems have undergone several successful tests, demonstrating India's growing indigenous capability to protect strategic assets and population centres from hostile missile threats.
