What is AAD?
Advanced Air Defence (AAD) is a key component of India’s two-tier Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It is an endo-atmospheric interceptor missile designed to destroy incoming enemy ballistic missiles at altitudes between 30 and 150 kilometers within the atmosphere. AAD works alongside the exo-atmospheric Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) missile to provide a layered shield against hostile missiles. The system was first successfully tested in 2006 and has undergone multiple trials since, demonstrating India’s growing indigenous defence capabilities. AAD is primarily used by the Indian Air Force and is deployed at strategic locations to protect major cities and military assets.
