Low Flying Zone
Full Form of LFZ
What is LFZ?
A Low Flying Zone (LFZ) is a designated airspace where aircraft are permitted to operate at low altitudes, typically below 1,000 feet above ground level. In India, LFZs are primarily used by the Indian Air Force (IAF) for training sorties, tactical maneuvers, and low-level flying exercises that simulate combat or terrain-hugging flight. Additionally, agricultural aviation services and state police surveillance helicopters may utilize these zones for crop dusting, aerial surveys, or emergency response operations. LFZs are established over sparsely populated areas such as deserts, forests, or coastal regions to minimize noise disturbance and safety risks to the public. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Indian Air Force jointly coordinate the notification and deconfliction of these zones through aeronautical information publications. While not a direct subject for most competitive exams, understanding LFZs can appear in questions related to Indian airspace management, aviation regulations, or defense infrastructure in UPSC Civil Services or CDS exams. The designation helps ensure orderly and safe low-altitude flight operations across the country’s diverse geography.
