Permanent Disability Retirement
Full Form of PDR
What is PDR?
Permanent Disability Retirement (PDR) is a welfare scheme under the Indian government, primarily for defence and central armed forces personnel who suffer permanent disability during active service due to injuries, diseases, or accidents attributable to military duty. Governed by the Ministry of Defence and applicable to the Army, Navy, Air Force, and paramilitary forces, PDR allows early retirement without requiring the minimum qualifying service period for a regular pension. The process begins with a medical board assessment that certifies the disability as permanent and attributable to service. Upon approval, the individual receives a disability pension, often higher than a standard pension, along with lifelong medical benefits and other allowances. PDR is also available to some civilian government servants under the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules. This provision ensures financial security and dignity for those who sacrifice their health for national security. In competitive exams like CDS, AFCAT, SSB, and UPSC, questions on defence welfare schemes, including PDR, are common, making it a relevant topic for aspirants. The scheme underscores India's commitment to its personnel and their families.
