Kerala Administrative Tribunal
Full Form of KAT
What is KAT?
The Kerala Administrative Tribunal (KAT) is a quasi-judicial body established under the Kerala Administrative Tribunal Act, 1995, to adjudicate disputes concerning the service matters of Kerala government employees. It serves as a specialised forum for resolving issues related to recruitment, promotion, seniority, transfers, disciplinary actions, and pensions within state public services. Operating from its principal bench in Thiruvananthapuram, KAT functions similarly to the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) but exclusively for state-level employees in Kerala. This tribunal reduces the burden on the Kerala High Court by providing faster and more accessible remedies for grievances of state government staff. It is particularly relevant for candidates preparing for Kerala Public Service Commission (KPSC) exams and judicial services, as understanding its role is part of the state’s administrative framework. KAT hears cases filed by employees of the Kerala government, including those in boards and corporations owned by the state. Its decisions are binding but can be challenged in the High Court. For competitive exams like the Kerala Administrative Service (KAS) and law officer exams, questions on KAT’s jurisdiction and composition often appear. The tribunal thus plays a vital role in ensuring administrative justice and efficiency in Kerala’s public sector.
