Junior Research Qualifier
Full Form of JRQ
What is JRQ?
The Junior Research Qualifier (JRQ) is an assessment test used by certain Indian research institutes and universities to screen candidates for entry-level research positions or doctoral programmes. It evaluates analytical thinking, subject-specific knowledge, and basic research methodology. The JRQ is typically conducted at the institutional level, often after a candidate has cleared a national eligibility test like JRF or GATE. It serves as a second-level filter to ensure that shortlisted candidates possess the practical aptitude required for independent research. The exam format may include multiple-choice questions, short-answer problems, and a written component. In India, JRQ is most commonly associated with premier institutes such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), where it is used for selecting Junior Research Fellows (JRFs) for specific projects. Students appearing for postgraduate research positions should be aware that clearing the JRQ is often a prerequisite for final admission. While not as widely recognised as national-level exams, the JRQ plays a crucial role in maintaining research quality at the institutional level.
