Jawahar Rozgar Kendra
Full Form of JRK
What is JRK?
Jawahar Rozgar Kendra (JRK) refers to the local employment assistance centres established under the now-defunct Jawahar Rozgar Yojana (JRY), a rural wage employment programme launched by the Government of India in 1989. These centres were set up at block and village levels to serve as the primary interface between job-seeking rural unskilled and semi-skilled workers and the implementing authorities. The typical roles of a JRK included registration of beneficiaries, issuing job cards, maintaining muster rolls, and disbursing wages for public works such as road construction, pond digging, and school building repairs. Although JRY was later merged into larger schemes like the Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana and eventually the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), the term JRK is still used in some states to refer to the earliest model of decentralised employment facilitation. The concept highlights India's long-standing commitment to providing social security through guaranteed work. Understanding JRK is relevant for candidates preparing for UPSC, state PCS, or rural development examinations, as it forms part of the historical evolution of rural employment policies in India.
