Junior House Resident
Full Form of JHR
What is JHR?
Junior House Resident, commonly abbreviated as JHR, refers to a doctor who has recently completed the MBBS degree and is undergoing compulsory rotatory internship or early residency training in a hospital. In India, the role of a JHR is foundational to clinical practice, as these young physicians rotate through departments such as medicine, surgery, paediatrics, and obstetrics under the supervision of senior doctors and consultants. JHRs handle day-to-day patient care, maintain case files, assist in surgeries, attend ward rounds, and respond to emergency calls during night shifts. The position is governed by the National Medical Commission and is mandatory in most teaching hospitals attached to medical colleges. JHRs typically receive a stipend as per state government or institutional norms. This term is highly relevant for NEET PG aspirants and MBBS students preparing for clinical duties, as understanding the hierarchy from intern to senior resident is a common topic in viva voce, group discussions, and medical entrance interviews across India.
