Jawahar Gram Vikas
Full Form of JGV
What is JGV?
Jawahar Gram Vikas (JGV) was a rural development program initiated by the Government of India aimed at generating employment and creating community assets in villages. Launched as part of the broader poverty alleviation strategy, JGV focused on infrastructure projects such as roads, wells, school buildings, and sanitation facilities in rural areas. The scheme was implemented through panchayati raj institutions and was designed to provide wage employment to the rural poor, especially during lean agricultural seasons. JGV was later subsumed or replaced by more comprehensive programs like the Jawahar Gram Samridhi Yojana (JGSY) and eventually the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). It played a significant role in rural job creation and asset building in the 1990s. For competitive exams like UPSC and state civil services, understanding JGV is useful to trace the evolution of rural employment schemes in India, though it is now mostly of historical significance.
