Janani Bal Suraksha Yojana
Full Form of JBY
What is JBY?
Janani Bal Suraksha Yojana (JBY) is a maternal and child health protection scheme launched by the Government of India under the National Health Mission (NHM). It aims to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates by providing financial assistance and quality healthcare services to pregnant women and new mothers, especially those from economically weaker sections. The scheme covers antenatal care, safe delivery, postnatal care, and essential newborn care, including immunization and nutrition support. Beneficiaries receive cash incentives for institutional delivery and for completing health check-ups, encouraging families to seek proper medical attention rather than relying on untrained birth attendants. JBY is implemented across all states and union territories, often integrated with other schemes like Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) to ensure free and respectful care. It is widely used in primary health centres, community health centres, and district hospitals. For competitive exams like UPSC and state civil services, JBY is a frequently mentioned scheme in governance and health policy questions. The program has significantly contributed to improving maternal health indicators and reducing out-of-pocket expenditure for poor households, making it a cornerstone of India’s family welfare initiatives.
