What is JSY?
Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is a flagship maternal health program launched by the Government of India in 2005 under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). It aims to reduce maternal and infant mortality by promoting institutional deliveries among pregnant women, especially those from below-poverty-line families, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other vulnerable groups. The scheme provides cash assistance to women who deliver in government or accredited private health facilities, thereby encouraging safe childbirth and access to skilled birth attendants. It also offers post-delivery care and transport support. JSY is implemented across all states and union territories, with a particular focus on high-focus states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The scheme has significantly increased the rate of institutional deliveries in rural India, contributing to better health outcomes. For competitive exams such as UPSC, SSC, and state-level civil services, JSY is an important topic under health schemes and government welfare programs, often appearing in questions related to social sector initiatives.
