Joint Admission Board
Full Form of JAB
What is JAB?
The Joint Admission Board (JAB) is the apex decision-making body responsible for the conduct of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced and the subsequent allocation of seats in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across India. Comprising directors and senior faculty from all IITs, along with representatives from the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders, JAB formulates policies regarding examination schedules, syllabus, eligibility criteria, reservation norms, and admission procedures. It meets annually to review and set cut-off marks, approve the question paper pattern, and oversee the transparent counselling process through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). JAB's decisions carry binding authority for all IITs and directly impact lakhs of engineering aspirants each year. The board also handles grievance redressal related to admissions and ensures that the process adheres to government guidelines on equity and merit. In the context of competitive exams in India, JAB is synonymous with IIT admissions, and questions about its functioning often appear in general awareness sections of UPSC, SSC, and banking exams. Its role has become even more critical with the introduction of reforms like multiple sessions and remote proctoring for JEE Advanced.
