What is IVM?

In Vitro Maturation (IVM) is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) where immature eggs are retrieved from a woman's ovaries and matured in a laboratory setting before being fertilized. Unlike conventional IVF, which requires high doses of hormonal stimulation to mature eggs inside the body, IVM collects eggs at an earlier stage and completes their development externally. This reduces the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) and lowers overall medication costs. In India, IVM is gaining traction as an alternative for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or those sensitive to fertility drugs. It is performed in specialized fertility clinics across major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru. The procedure typically involves monitoring the menstrual cycle, transvaginal egg retrieval, culturing eggs for 24–48 hours, and then performing ICSI or conventional insemination. Although less established than IVF, IVM offers a gentler path to pregnancy for certain patient profiles.
