International Medical Qualification
Full Form of IMQ
What is IMQ?
International Medical Qualification (IMQ) refers to a medical degree or diploma obtained from a medical institution outside India. For Indian nationals or overseas citizens of India who graduate from foreign medical schools, their IMQ must be recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the apex regulatory body for medical education and practice in India. The recognition process typically requires the candidate to pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), a screening test conducted by the NMC. This examination ensures that the knowledge and skills acquired through the IMQ meet the standards set for medical practitioners in India. IMQ is a critical concept for Indian students pursuing MBBS abroad in countries such as China, Russia, Ukraine, and the Philippines, as a large number of students opt for overseas medical education due to limited seats in Indian colleges. Practicing medicine in India with an IMQ mandates successful completion of the FMGE, after which doctors are eligible to register with state medical councils. For competitive exams like NEET PG, IMQ holders must also fulfill additional eligibility criteria. Understanding the nuances of IMQ is essential for medical aspirants and professionals navigating cross-border medical education and licensing pathways.
