International Direct Dialing
Full Form of IDD
What is IDD?
International Direct Dialing (IDD) is a telecommunications service that allows callers to place international telephone calls without operator assistance. In India, IDD is widely used for making calls to other countries by dialing a specific international access code—typically 00—followed by the country code, area code, and local number. This system was introduced by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and is now offered by both public and private telecom operators such as BSNL, Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone Idea. IDD calls are commonly made from landlines or mobile phones and are billed per minute based on the destination country's tariff. The service is essential for businesses with global clients, students studying abroad, and families maintaining cross-border connections. While Voice over IP (VoIP) services like WhatsApp and Skype have reduced its usage, IDD remains relevant for reliable call quality and official communications. In Indian competitive exams like banking and telecom officer exams, questions on IDD codes, tariff plans, and differences between STD (Subscriber Trunk Dialing) and IDD occasionally appear. Understanding IDD is useful for those preparing for roles in customer service, telecom management, or international trade.
