International Cricket Council
Full Form of ICC
What is ICC?
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the supreme governing body for the sport of cricket worldwide. Founded in 1909 as the Imperial Cricket Conference by England, Australia, and South Africa, it was later renamed the International Cricket Conference in 1965 and adopted its current name in 1987. Headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the ICC comprises over 100 member nations, including 12 Full Members that play Test cricket. India, represented by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is a Full Member and one of the most influential cricketing nations. The ICC is responsible for framing the rules of the game, organizing major international tournaments such as the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, ICC T20 World Cup, and the ICC World Test Championship, as well as overseeing player conduct, anti-doping regulations, and anti-corruption measures. In India, the ICC’s decisions have a massive impact on the cricket calendar, sponsorship, and broadcasting rights, making it a familiar topic in sports news and public discourse. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking, questions often appear regarding the ICC’s headquarters, founding year, current chairman, and key tournaments. Understanding the ICC’s role is essential for aspirants keeping up with sports current affairs.
