What is IOC?
Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), commonly known as IndianOil, is India’s largest commercial oil and gas company, operating under the administrative control of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Established in 1964 through the merger of Indian Oil Company and Indian Refineries, IOC is a Maharatna public sector undertaking with headquarters in New Delhi. The corporation spans the entire hydrocarbon value chain, including refining, pipeline transportation, marketing of petroleum products, exploration and production of crude oil, natural gas, and petrochemicals. It operates 11 of India’s 23 refineries and an extensive network of pipelines, terminals, and retail outlets under the brand IndianOil. IOC plays a pivotal role in ensuring India’s energy security, supplying fuels like petrol, diesel, LPG, ATF, and lubricants across the nation. The company also engages in global trade and has joint ventures in Sri Lanka and Mauritius. For students preparing for competitive exams such as UPSC, SSC, and banking, IOC’s structure, Maharatna status, and contribution to the Indian economy are frequently tested in general awareness sections.
