Internet-Based Test
Full Form of IBT
What is IBT?
The Internet-Based Test (IBT) refers to the computer-delivered format of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), commonly known as TOEFL iBT. It assesses the English language proficiency of non-native speakers in reading, listening, speaking, and writing. In India, TOEFL iBT is the standard for students seeking admission to universities in English-speaking countries, particularly the United States, Canada, and Australia. The test is conducted online at authorized test centers across major Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai. Its role is critical for visa applications and scholarship eligibility. Since its introduction in 2005, the IBT has replaced the older paper-based test (PBT), offering more realistic language assessment through integrated tasks. Indian students often take the test after completing high school or during undergraduate studies. The IBT score is accepted by over 11,000 institutions worldwide. For exam preparation, coaching centers and online resources are widely available. The IBTs relevance in India is underscored by the growing trend of study abroad, making it a key milestone for many aspirants. Understanding the format and scoring, which ranges from 0 to 120, is essential for achieving competitive scores. It is also used by some Indian employers for recruitment in multinational companies.
