What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally recognized English proficiency test designed to assess the language skills of non-native speakers. In India, IELTS is primarily used for higher education admissions abroad, immigration to English-speaking countries like Australia, Canada, the UK, and New Zealand, and professional registration. The test evaluates four key competencies: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. It is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English. In India, IELTS is taken by lakhs of students and professionals each year, with test centers in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai. The exam is offered in two formats: Academic (for university admissions) and General Training (for immigration and work). IELTS scores are accepted by over 11,000 organizations worldwide. For Indian students, a high IELTS score (typically 6.5–7.5 band) is often a prerequisite for applying to top universities abroad. The test is also frequently featured in competitive exam preparation discussions, as it is a key gateway for overseas opportunities. Being aware of IELTS patterns and scoring can significantly benefit candidates aiming for global education or career mobility.
