What is HWG?

The Home Guard Wing (HWG) is a voluntary auxiliary force that functions under the control of state governments in India. It is primarily tasked with assisting the police in maintaining internal security, law and order, and traffic management during festivals, elections, and public events. The HWG also plays a crucial role in civil defence and disaster response, providing manpower during floods, cyclones, earthquakes, and other emergencies. Established under the Home Guard Act of various states, its members—known as home guards—receive basic training in crowd control, first aid, and fire fighting. The HWG operates at the district and state levels, often mobilised by the district magistrate or superintendent of police. In addition to routine duties, home guards support the police in patrolling, night rounds, and checkpost duties, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. The wing is separate from the regular police force and offers a platform for citizens to serve the nation in a part-time capacity. For competitive exams like the UPSC CAPF or state police recruitment, knowledge of the HWG’s structure and functions is relevant as it forms part of India’s internal security framework.
