High-Value Target
Full Form of HVT
What is HVT?
HVT stands for High-Value Target, a term widely used in defence, police, and intelligence operations to designate a person or asset of significant strategic, financial, or ideological importance. In the Indian context, HVTs often include top-tier terrorists, insurgent leaders, drug cartel heads, or key figures in organised crime. These individuals are priority targets for neutralisation or capture by agencies such as the Indian Army, National Security Guard (NSG), and state police forces. The term gained prominence during counterinsurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as anti-Maoist campaigns in central India. It is also used in VIP security and diplomatic evacuations. In examinations like UPSC, CAPF, and defence exams, questions frequently refer to HVT operations and their tactical implications, especially in current affairs regarding military operations and cross-border terrorism. The concept underpins modern counter-terrorism strategy, where eliminating a HVT can disrupt entire networks.
