Hyperparathyroidism
Full Form of HPT
What is HPT?
Hyperparathyroidism (HPT) is a medical condition characterized by overactivity of the parathyroid glands, leading to excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH). This results in elevated calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia) and can cause bone loss, kidney stones, fatigue, and other systemic issues. In India, HPT is often underdiagnosed due to lack of routine calcium screening, but it is increasingly recognized in patients with recurrent renal calculi or osteoporosis. The condition can be primary, secondary, or tertiary. Primary HPT is usually caused by a benign adenoma, while secondary HPT commonly occurs in chronic kidney disease due to vitamin D deficiency—a widespread issue in the Indian population. Diagnosis involves blood tests for calcium, PTH, and vitamin D, along with imaging like ultrasound or sestamibi scan. Treatment options include surgical removal of the overactive gland(s) and medical management with calcimimetics. HPT is a key topic in Indian medical entrance exams (NEET PG, AIIMS) and clinical practice, especially in endocrinology and nephrology. Awareness campaigns are improving early detection and outcomes.
