What is HPH?
The Himachal Pradesh High Court (HPH) is the highest judicial body in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. Established in 1971 under the Himachal Pradesh Reorganisation Act, it has its principal seat in Shimla, the state capital, with benches in Dharamshala. The HPH exercises original and appellate jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters within the state, and also has the power of judicial review over state laws. It plays a crucial role in upholding the rule of law, protecting fundamental rights, and ensuring justice for citizens of Himachal Pradesh. The court is led by a Chief Justice appointed by the President of India, and consists of several other judges. Its judgments are binding on lower courts in the state and can be appealed to the Supreme Court of India. The HPH is particularly known for cases related to environmental protection in the Himalayan region and tribal rights. For competitive exams like the Himachal Pradesh Judicial Services or state PCS exams, knowledge of the HPH's structure and landmark judgments is important.
