High Merit Quota
Full Form of HMQ
What is HMQ?
The High Merit Quota (HMQ) is a special reservation policy used in Indian higher education, particularly in competitive entrance exams like JEE Advanced and NEET. It allows candidates from reserved categories (SC, ST, OBC, EWS) who have achieved exceptionally high marks to be considered for admission under the general merit pool, thereby increasing their chances of getting into top-tier institutions such as IITs, NITs, and AIIMS without being limited by their category's cutoff. Introduced by the Ministry of Education, HMQ aims to reward merit while maintaining social equity. It is implemented during centralized counselling processes like JoSAA and MCC. Students often strategize their preparation to qualify for HMQ, which can provide a significant advantage. In exam contexts, questions on reservation policies and HMQ frequently appear in UPSC, SSC, and other competitive exams, testing awareness of affirmative action in education. Overall, HMQ represents a blend of meritocracy and inclusivity, helping the brightest reserved-category students access premier institutions.
