Hemoglobin
Full Form of HGB
What is HGB?
Hemoglobin (HGB) is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and returns carbon dioxide to be exhaled. In India, HGB levels are routinely measured in blood tests (CBC) to screen for anaemia, a common health issue affecting a large population. Low HGB indicates iron deficiency, malnutrition, or chronic diseases, while high levels may signal dehydration or blood disorders. The test result is reported in grams per deciliter (g/dL). For medical students, HGB is a key parameter in diagnosing thalassemia, sickle cell disease, and other haemoglobinopathies prevalent in certain Indian communities. Understanding HGB is essential for NEET PG and AIIMS exams, where questions often cover normal reference ranges (typically 13-17 g/dL for men, 12-15 g/dL for women) and clinical implications of abnormal values. Public health programmes in India, like the Anaemia Mukt Bharat initiative, focus on improving HGB levels through iron supplementation and dietary advice.

My recent health checkup showed low HGB, so the doctor recommended iron-rich foods like spinach and dates.
