Global Reporting Initiative
Full Form of GRI
What is GRI?
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is an international independent standards organization that helps businesses, governments, and other organizations understand and communicate their impacts on issues such as climate change, human rights, and corruption. In India, GRI standards are widely adopted by companies for sustainability reporting, particularly those listed on stock exchanges or engaged in corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has mandated Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) for top listed entities, which aligns closely with GRI principles. GRI standards are used across sectors – from manufacturing to IT services – to disclose environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance transparently. For students preparing for exams like CA, CS, or MBA, understanding GRI is essential as it forms the backbone of modern corporate disclosure frameworks. The initiative was founded in 1997 and has evolved into the most widely used sustainability reporting framework globally. In India, its adoption has grown significantly after the introduction of mandatory CSR spending under the Companies Act, 2013, and the push for ESG integration by regulators. GRI provides a common language for stakeholders to assess non-financial performance, enabling informed decision-making by investors, consumers, and civil society.
