Gender Parity Index
Full Form of GPI
What is GPI?
The Gender Parity Index (GPI) is a statistical measure used to assess gender equality in access to education. It is calculated as the ratio of the number of girls to boys enrolled at a given level of education, typically in primary, secondary, or tertiary schooling. A GPI of 1 indicates perfect parity between genders, while values below or above 1 indicate disparities in favor of boys or girls, respectively. In India, GPI is a critical indicator used by the Ministry of Education, UNESCO, and various state governments to monitor progress toward gender equity in education. It is published annually in reports such as the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) and the Economic Survey. The GPI helps policymakers identify regions and levels of education where gender gaps persist, enabling targeted interventions like scholarships, infrastructure improvements, and awareness campaigns. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, or CTET, understanding GPI is vital for topics related to social development, education policy, and sustainable development goals. India has made significant strides in achieving near-parity at the primary level, though challenges remain at higher education and in certain states like Rajasthan and Bihar.
