Gross Enrollment Ratio
Full Form of GER
What is GER?
The Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) is a statistical measure used in the education sector to indicate the number of students enrolled in a specific level of education, regardless of age, expressed as a percentage of the official age-group population corresponding to that level. In India, GER is widely used by the Ministry of Education, the National Sample Survey (NSS), and the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) to assess enrollment trends and the reach of educational institutions. It is calculated for primary, secondary, and higher education levels. For example, a GER of 100% implies that the system is able to accommodate all children of the relevant age group; values above 100% indicate over-aged or under-aged enrollments. The Indian government monitors GER closely to evaluate the success of schemes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan. In competitive exams such as UPSC and UGC NET, questions often appear on GER trends and their interpretations, making it a crucial topic for aspirants. While GER provides an overall picture, it does not account for dropout rates or quality of education, so it is often used alongside other indicators like Net Enrollment Ratio (NER).
