North Eastern Region
Full Form of NER
What is NER?
The North Eastern Region (NER) refers to the eight states of Northeast India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. This region is geographically isolated and culturally diverse, and the Indian government has given it special attention through dedicated ministries and policies. The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) was established to coordinate development efforts, while the North Eastern Council (NEC) acts as an advisory body for planning and resource allocation. The NER is often discussed in the context of the Act East Policy, border security, infrastructure connectivity, and insurgency management. For students preparing for exams like UPSC and state civil services, understanding the NER is crucial because questions frequently appear on regional development schemes, special constitutional provisions (like Article 371A-G), and the strategic importance of the region in India's foreign policy.
