Gross Heat Value
Full Form of GHV
What is GHV?
Gross Heat Value (GHV) is a term used in energy and fuel technology to denote the total amount of heat released when a unit quantity of fuel is completely combusted under standard conditions, including the heat of condensation of water vapor. In the Indian context, GHV is frequently used in the assessment of coal, biomass, and other solid fuels for power generation and industrial applications. It is a critical parameter for thermal power plants, where coal quality directly affects efficiency and emissions. GHV is also relevant in the Indian Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) standards and is studied by engineering students preparing for GATE or ESE exams. Unlike Net Calorific Value (NCV), GHV assumes all water vapor condenses, so it is always higher. The term is commonly encountered when analyzing fuel samples in labs, during procurement negotiations, or when evaluating renewable energy sources like agricultural waste. For Indian competitive exams, candidates are expected to distinguish GHV from related calorific values and understand its practical impact on energy policy.
