Human Herpesvirus
Full Form of HHV
What is HHV?
Human Herpesvirus (HHV) refers to a family of DNA viruses that cause a wide range of infections in humans. There are eight known types, designated HHV-1 through HHV-8, each associated with specific diseases. HHV-1 and HHV-2 cause oral and genital herpes, HHV-3 causes varicella-zoster (chickenpox and shingles), HHV-4 (Epstein-Barr virus) is linked to infectious mononucleosis and certain cancers, HHV-5 (cytomegalovirus) can cause severe illness in immunocompromised individuals, HHV-6 and HHV-7 are associated with roseola in children, and HHV-8 is linked to Kaposi sarcoma, especially in HIV patients. In India, HHV infections are highly prevalent, with studies showing high seroprevalence for viruses like HSV-1 and VZV. These viruses are transmitted through direct contact, respiratory droplets, or vertically from mother to child. Diagnosis often involves serological tests or PCR, and treatment includes antiviral drugs like acyclovir. HHV is a common topic in Indian medical entrance exams (NEET-PG, AIIMS) and virology courses, where students must memorize the eight types, their clinical features, and latency mechanisms. Proper management and vaccination (e.g., varicella vaccine) are key public health measures in India.
