Growth Hormone Deficiency
Full Form of GHD
What is GHD?
Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) is a medical condition in which the pituitary gland does not produce enough growth hormone, essential for normal growth and development, particularly in children. In India, GHD is a recognised cause of short stature, with prevalence estimated at around 1 in 4,000 to 1 in 10,000 live births. It can be congenital or acquired due to tumours, trauma, or infections affecting the hypothalamus or pituitary. Diagnosis involves growth chart monitoring, stimulation tests, and MRI scans. Treatment consists of recombinant human growth hormone injections, which can significantly improve height and metabolic health. GHD is a key topic in medical entrance exams such as NEET PG and in pediatric endocrinology training. Early detection and intervention are critical to prevent long-term complications like reduced bone density and increased cardiovascular risk. In Indian clinical settings, awareness about GHD is growing, with dedicated pediatric endocrine clinics now available in major cities. The condition also appears in public health discussions regarding malnutrition versus hormonal causes of stunting.
