Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
Full Form of TSH
What is TSH?
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that regulates the production of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) by the thyroid gland. In India, TSH is a critical marker in diagnosing and monitoring thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, which are highly prevalent due to iodine deficiency and autoimmune conditions. The TSH test is a common blood test prescribed by general physicians and endocrinologists, often as part of routine health checkups or for patients presenting symptoms like fatigue, weight changes, or irregular heartbeat. It is used in clinical settings, diagnostic labs, and during pregnancy to ensure maternal and fetal thyroid health. In Indian medical examinations like NEET PG, AIIMS, and nursing entrance tests, TSH physiology and interpretation are frequently tested. Understanding TSH levels helps clinicians adjust levothyroxine dosages and monitor treatment efficacy. The normal TSH range may vary slightly across labs but is generally between 0.4 and 4.0 mIU/L.
