Training and Placement Officer
Full Form of TPO
What is TPO?
A Training and Placement Officer, commonly abbreviated as TPO, is a professional appointed in Indian educational institutions to manage campus recruitment and prepare students for the corporate world. The TPO heads the placement cell of engineering colleges, MBA institutes, polytechnics, and universities, acting as the main link between students and hiring companies. Their responsibilities include inviting companies for campus drives, organising internship programmes, conducting pre-placement training in aptitude tests, group discussions, and personal interviews, and maintaining corporate relationships to bring reputed recruiters on campus. The role gained prominence in India after the IT boom of the 1990s and the rapid growth of private higher education, making placement cells a standard feature in nearly every professional college. Today, premier institutions such as the IITs, IIMs, and NITs have dedicated, highly active TPO offices that handle thousands of placements each year. Students preparing for campus drives benefit from understanding how the TPO cell functions, and aspirants wanting to enter this field generally pursue an MBA in Human Resources along with strong industry networking skills.
