Gramin Dak Kendra
Full Form of GDK
What is GDK?
Gramin Dak Kendra (GDK) is a rural post office established under India Post to extend postal and basic financial services to remote villages across India. Each GDK is typically managed by a single Gramin Dak Sevak (rural postal worker) and operates as the last-mile delivery point for mail, parcels, and government correspondence. In addition to traditional postal services, GDKs play a crucial role in financial inclusion by offering savings accounts, recurring deposits, and insurance products through India Post Payments Bank (IPPB). They also facilitate disbursement of government benefits such as MGNREGA wages and pension payments. GDKs are found in almost every village panchayat and are a lifeline for communities lacking access to formal banking. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking tests, understanding the GDK model is important for questions on rural development, financial inclusion, and public service delivery. The network of over 1.3 lakh rural post offices—of which GDKs form a significant part—makes India Post one of the largest postal networks in the world.
