Flying Squad Unit
Full Form of FSU
What is FSU?
The Flying Squad Unit (FSU) is a specialised mobile enforcement team deployed primarily by the Election Commission of India during elections to monitor and curb malpractices such as illegal distribution of money, liquor, or gifts aimed at influencing voters. It also operates under various state police and excise departments for surprise checks on illegal activities like smuggling, gambling, and traffic violations. FSUs are composed of police officers, magistrates, and sometimes video surveillance teams who conduct rapid inspections across constituencies without prior notice. They are crucial in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process by seizing unaccounted cash, illicit liquor, and other inducements, and can file FIRs or make arrests on the spot. During elections, FSUs set up checkpoints on highways and sensitive locations, working in coordination with static surveillance teams. For competitive exams like UPSC, State PCS, and SSC, understanding the role of FSUs is important for questions on election machinery, model code of conduct, and enforcement agencies. The unit is temporary and task-specific, often reassigned after the election period ends.
