Fighter Ground Attack
Full Form of FGA
What is FGA?
Fighter Ground Attack (FGA) is a classification of multirole combat aircraft designed primarily for air-to-ground strike missions while retaining some air-to-air combat capability. In the Indian context, the term is most famously associated with the SEPECAT Jaguar FGA aircraft, inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF) in the 1970s and still in service after upgrades. These aircraft are optimized for low-level penetration, precision bombing, and close air support, making them vital for ground force coordination and strategic bombing. The IAF operates both the Jaguar FGA and the upgraded Jaguar DARIN III variants, which have been enhanced with modern avionics, radar, and weapon systems. FGA aircraft are deployed at frontline bases such as Ambala, Gorakhpur, and Jamnagar, and regularly participate in exercises like Gagan Shakti and Vayu Shakti. They have also seen combat in the 1999 Kargil War and cross-border strike operations. For defence aspirants preparing for exams like CDS, AFCAT, and NDA, understanding FGA classification is important for questions on aircraft types and roles. The term remains relevant in discussions about the IAF’s modernization and the planned replacement of aging Jaguars with newer platforms like the Rafale or indigenous Tejas Mk2.
