Continuous Assessment System
Full Form of CAS
What is CAS?
The Continuous Assessment System (CAS) is an evaluation method that assesses a student's performance throughout an academic term rather than relying solely on final examinations. In India, CAS has been adopted by many schools and universities under recommendations from the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and earlier by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) through the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) framework. Under CAS, students are evaluated on a regular basis through unit tests, class assignments, projects, quizzes, and presentations, with marks or grades accumulated over the term. This system aims to reduce the stress of high-stakes final exams and provides a more holistic view of a student's learning progress and areas needing improvement. It is commonly used in Classes 6 to 10 in CBSE-affiliated schools and increasingly in higher education institutions adopting choice-based credit systems. For competitive exams like CTET or KVS recruitment, understanding CAS is often tested in pedagogy sections. Teachers are trained to design formative assessments and maintain cumulative records. While CAS has been praised for promoting consistent learning, challenges remain in implementation such as increased workload on teachers and standardisation across diverse classrooms. Overall, CAS represents a shift towards more student-centric, skill-based education in India.

Our school introduced a Continuous Assessment System for Class 9, so students now have weekly quizzes and projects instead of one big final exam.
