Faculty Development Unit
Full Form of FDU
What is FDU?
A Faculty Development Unit (FDU) is a dedicated cell or centre within Indian universities and colleges tasked with enhancing the teaching, research, and professional competencies of faculty members. It typically operates under the institution's Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) or Teaching Learning Centre, organizing workshops, seminars, training programs, and mentoring sessions. The FDU focuses on pedagogical innovations, use of technology in classrooms, research methodology, soft skills, and leadership development. It plays a crucial role in preparing faculty for statutory requirements such as UGC regulations and NAAC accreditation, ensuring continuous professional growth. FDUs are commonly found in central universities, state universities, and autonomous colleges, especially those recognized under Scheme of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT). For competitive exams like UGC NET or university teaching positions, familiarity with FDU activities and their impact on teaching quality is relevant. The unit also collaborates with HRDCs and subject-specific bodies to offer refresher courses. By fostering a culture of lifelong learning, FDUs contribute to the overall quality improvement of higher education in India.
