Electronic Warfare Officer
Full Form of EWO
What is EWO?
An Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO) is a specialized officer in the Indian Armed Forces, primarily in the Indian Air Force (IAF), who is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing electronic warfare operations. EWOs manage sophisticated systems that detect, deceive, and disrupt enemy radar, communications, and other electronic emissions. In India, EWOs are integral to modern warfare, operating from airborne platforms such as fighter jets, surveillance aircraft, and helicopters, as well as ground-based stations. They use electronic support measures to gather intelligence, electronic attack to jam or spoof enemy systems, and electronic protection to safeguard friendly assets. The role is critical during combat operations, joint exercises, and peacetime surveillance. EWOs also train extensively in electronic warfare tactics, signal analysis, and countermeasures. For defence aspirants, the position is highly sought after, and candidates can become EWOs through the IAF’s AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test) or the combined defence services examination (CDSE), leading to a career in the Electronics and Warfare stream. The increasing reliance on networked warfare makes the EWO’s role vital for India’s strategic deterrence and battlefield dominance.
