What is RWR?
A Radar Warning Receiver, commonly abbreviated as RWR, is an electronic detection device installed primarily on military aircraft to alert pilots about radar signals emitted by enemy radar systems. It functions as a passive sensor that identifies the direction, type, and threat level of incoming radar emissions, enabling the pilot to take evasive manoeuvres or deploy electronic countermeasures. In India, RWR systems are vital components fitted on fighter jets operated by the Indian Air Force, including the Su-30MKI, Tejas, MiG-29, and Mirage 2000, often developed in collaboration with DRDO and Bharat Electronics Limited through indigenisation programmes such as the Tarang series. The device plays a critical role in air combat survivability by providing real-time situational awareness against surface-to-air missile batteries, enemy interceptors, and ground-based tracking radars. RWRs are also used on naval helicopters and certain armoured vehicles of the Indian Armed Forces. For students and aspirants, RWR is a frequently asked topic in defence-related entrance examinations such as NDA, CDS, AFCAT, and technical entries, where knowledge of modern electronic warfare systems is regularly tested.
