Emergency Medical Technician
Full Form of EMT
What is EMT?
An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a healthcare professional trained to provide immediate medical care to critically ill or injured patients before and during transport to a hospital. In India, EMTs are a crucial part of the emergency medical services (EMS) system, working with government-run ambulance networks like the 108 service, private ambulance providers, fire departments, and disaster response teams. They are trained in basic life support (BLS), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), wound management, spinal immobilization, and splinting fractures. EMTs are often the first point of contact in road traffic accidents, cardiac emergencies, and natural disasters. Their timely interventions help reduce mortality and morbidity. With the expansion of emergency care infrastructure across Indian cities and rural areas, the demand for trained EMTs is growing. They operate under medical protocols and communicate with hospital emergency departments to ensure seamless patient handover. For competitive exams such as UPSC civil services and nursing entrance tests, knowledge of EMT roles and the EMS system is relevant in public health and disaster management sections. The profession is increasingly recognized through certification programs by the National Health Mission and state health departments, making it a viable career path in India's evolving healthcare landscape.
