Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Full Form of ALS
What is ALS?
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to loss of voluntary muscle control. In India, ALS is recognized as a rare but serious condition, often grouped under motor neuron diseases (MND). The disease causes gradual weakening of muscles, difficulty in speaking, swallowing, and eventually breathing. The exact cause remains unknown, though genetic and environmental factors are suspected. Diagnosis is clinical, supported by tests like electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies. Treatment focuses on symptom management and slowing progression, with medications like riluzole and edaravone approved in some countries, but access in India is limited by cost and availability. Multidisciplinary care involving neurologists, physiotherapists, and speech therapists is crucial. ALS gained global attention through the Ice Bucket Challenge, which also raised awareness in India. The disease typically affects adults between 40 and 70 years, with a slightly higher incidence in males. In India, registries and support groups are emerging to improve data and patient care. For medical students and professionals, ALS is an important topic in neurology exams, as it represents a classic example of upper and lower motor neuron involvement. Understanding ALS helps in differentiating it from other neurological disorders like spinal muscular atrophy and primary lateral sclerosis.
